Oregon Health Insurance Laws and Regulations

Oregon health insurance law regulates the private health insurance market to protect residents and applicants of coverage.

Typically, Oregon health insurance companies are allowed to accept applicants and set premiums based on a person's health history and pre-existing health conditions.

Those who are HIPAA-eligible must be accepted into a plan. Oregon health insurance companies are also prohibited from imposing waiting or exclusion periods under this federal law.

Oregon residents who are not HIPAA-eligible and are turned down for a private plan may purchase coverage through the Oregon Medical Insurance Pool, which accepts all applicants regardless of health history.

Oregon health insurance law also requires that all state health insurance companies provide coverage for certain medical services, including:

  • Mammograms
  • Screening for prostate, cervical, and colorectal cancer
  • Diabetes care
  • Medical care for pregnant women
  • Equal coverage for mental health conditions and physical health conditions
