In 1938, American Community and the Michigan Hospital Benefit Association were created. They later became American Hospital-Medical Benefit and were the first to offer individual and group hospital and surgical insurance plans.

Then in 1947, American Hospital-Medical created Community Life Insurance Company to provide life insurance. They operated separately until 1964 when they merged and became American Community Mutual Insurance Company.

Their headquarters is in Livonia, Michigan — just outside Detroit's city limits.
